Movie-marathon

Last night I stayed over at Marcia’s place, which is the apartment for Well Services’ staffs. It was really fun. We were well prepared, off course. We rented some movies and bought lots of stuff at the supermarket. Watched Bone Collector and half of Bridget Jones’ Diary on Saturday night (both of us fell asleep during the movie). On Sunday we continued with the other half of Bridget and Saw III and Serendipity. Yeah, a mixture of suspense and romantic movies. We ate a lot; besides having risotto for dinner, we also had popcorn, chocolate cakes, chocolate toffees… my so-called diet was totally ruined!! :D

I don’t know what she might think of me... but I think Marcia is a really nice person, and having her as my friend here is interesting for me, considering we both are very different culturally. There are times when I feel that we both are struggling to understand each other (especially as she doesn’t speak English and my Portuguese is not too good). She’s a very easy person to get along with; she’s like my Indonesian girl friends. She is normal, unlike those snob guys I knew in the company. She likes shopping, worries about her weight too, paints her nails with eye-catching colors, bought a giant fluffy frog for her to sleep with… Sometimes I wonder how we manage to communicate all this time :D I guess language is just a tool we use to communicate, and attitude and personal intentions are all that matters sometimes.

About the movies that we watched; Bone Collector, watched it a few years ago and forgot the details already, good one. Saw III, honestly, I despise this type of movie. Too much blood and violence, yuck! Bridget Jones and Serendipity, I selected those two in the movie rental, and those are my kinda thing :p

Oh anyway, weekend’s almost over now. Tomorrow will be the start of another week. We plan to call the visa guy tomorrow morning. I hope soon there will be a clear decision on what’s going to happen to me next.

Thank You so much for the nice weekend…

Quotes from Dead Poets Society

Movie time: Dead Poets Society
[Quoting Henry David Thoreau]
Neil: "I went into the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life... to put to rout all that was not life; and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."
[Rearrangement of sentences from H.D.T’s work: Where I lived]

John Keating: "Now we all have a great need for acceptance, but you must trust that your beliefs are unique, your own, even though others may think them odd or unpopular, even though the herd may go,"
[imitating a goat]
John Keating: "that's baaaaad." "Robert Frost said, "Two roads diverged in the wood and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference."

and last but not least:
John Keating: "Carpe, carpe diem, seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary."

Ratatouille

Yippee!!

Btw, Ratatouille lucu yaaa!

From the movie The Two Towers

...
ÉOWYN:
Women of this country learned long ago: Those without swords may still die upon them. I fear neither death nor pain.
ARAGORN:
What do you fear, my lady?
ÉOWYN:
A cage. To stay behind bars until use and old age accept them and all chance of valor has gone beyond recall or desire.

Amélie

I watched Amélie… again…
Uhh... I really love it…

It made me think that:

--> Life’s greatest pleasures are often found in simple things (for Amélie that means plunging fingers deep into a sack of grains or throwing pebbles into water)

--> Life can turn to be very unexpected sometimes, so I must always be ready for the surprises

--> Let’s believe in good karma; what goes around, comes around…

--> Some people may see the things that she did to the guy in the film as weird, but I personally think they are sweet…

I love the film mainly because of the simplicity of the story and the setting (it's Paris...) It is romantic in its own way, and it has a different sense of humor.
For me, the best scene is actually the last one, the ending… when they are on a bicycle… love it love it love it…
P.S. The soundtrack's great too!

Der Untergang

Abis nonton Downfall aka Der Untergang. Film ini menceritakan saat-saat terakhir Hitler sebelum akhirnya Nazi kalah perang dan Hitler bunuh diri di bunker nya di Berlin.

Suka bertanya-tanya ga sih, kok bisa sih ada someone as evil as Hitler? Waktu di Jerman, aku pernah ke concentration camp di Dachau, di Bayern deket München. Kalo mo jadi turis, ga disarankan sama sekali buat pergi ke concentration camp. It will ruin your mood. Perasaan yang ada setelah ke sana: sick.

My conclusion was that Hitler must be a mad man. No sane human being would ever do such things. However, it should be kept in mind that Hitler was not alone in it. There were hundreds of thousands of German armies who did the dirty works for him. It was his troops (ranging from Generals to the low-rank soldiers) that perform the mass-murders and tortures in the camps. Furthermore, there were millions of German citizens that put him into power in first place. Were they all deceived by Hitler’s charisma and propaganda?

In the film, Hitler’s last days were described by his secretary, Traudl Junge. Her impression of Hitler at that time was someone polite, fatherly and caring, who loved his dog so much, a vegetarian who despised eating meat, a non-smoker.
It is true that evil can be very deceiving and seem ideally beautiful.

There are some commentaries on the film which I found worth-quoting (I copied them from Wikipedia):

Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert wrote[3]:
"Admiration I did not feel. Sympathy I felt in the sense that I would feel it for a rabid dog, while accepting that it must be destroyed. I do not feel the film provides "a sufficient response to what Hitler actually did," because I feel no film can, and no response would be sufficient."
"As we regard this broken and pathetic Hitler, we realize that he did not alone create the Third Reich, but was the focus for a spontaneous uprising by many of the German people, fueled by
racism, xenophobia, grandiosity and fear. He was skilled in the ways he exploited that feeling, and surrounded himself by gifted strategists and propagandists, but he was not a great man, simply one armed by fate to unleash unimaginable evil. It is useful to reflect that racism, xenophobia, grandiosity and fear are still with us, and the defeat of one of their manifestations does not inoculate us against others."

Director Oliver Hirschbiegel confirmed that the film's makers sought to give Hitler a three-dimensional personality. "We know from all accounts that he was a
very charming man—a man who managed to seduce a whole people into barbarism."[4]

From Princess Diaries

Iseng, quote dari film Princess Diaries:

"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear. The brave may not live forever, but the cautious do not live at all. From now on you'll be traveling the road between who you think you are and who you can be. The key is to allow yourself to make the journey."

Bourne Supremacy

Just finished watching Bourne Supremacy. Like the film. Generally, I love movies about spies and secret agents, doing secret missions. :P

The movie is based on a novel written by Robert Ludlum, and it’s a sequel of the previous movie, Bourne Identity, which is also based on a novel written by the same author. The leading actor is Matt Damon (=P~)

In the movie, about half of the story took place in Berlin. It’s a nice feeling to realize that I recognize some places there (e.g. Sony Centre) and understand the language (Polizei!! Stehen bleiben!! Lucu deh kedengerannya… hehehe…). It is also cute to hear Matt Damon speaking German. You know, that’s how spies in the movie always are. No matter in which part of the world they set their foot on, they happen to speak the local language very fluently. :D

Well, overall, the movie is worth watching for. I would recommend this movie,
Bourne Identity, and Spy Game. Mission Impossible was quite nice too, but in my opinion, it is a little bit too Hollywood. Bond movies, hmm, too much women involvement…

Anyways, enough blogging and talking about films. Now, I should get back to work! :)

Somewhere out there

Let’s sing together with Fievel and Tanya Mousekewitz… :)

Fv: Somewhere out there,
beneath the pale moonlight,
someone's thinking of me and loving me tonight.

Ty: Somewhere out there,
someone's saying a prayer,
that we'll find one another in that big somewhere out there.

(*)Ty: And even though I know how very far apart we are,
it helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star.

Fv: And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby,
it helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky.

Together: Somewhere out there,
if love can see us through,
then we'll be together, somewhere out there,
out where dreams come true.
